Recently, RUC Longyao Archaeological Practice Group won the title of “Excellent Team” in the commendation meeting themed “Youth Serving the Country”, a social practice series aimed to encourage young students to absorb knowledge and enhance their abilities in social practice of various fields.
The group, which consists of 76 teachers and students from the School of History, conducted systematic archaeological investigation and research at Bairen City site at the eastern foot of Taihang Mountain, Longyao County, Hebei Province. The fieldwork lasted 21 days from August 14 to September 3, 2022. Its preliminary results have already been shared with the public, which aroused wide attention.
The practice is the start of the five-year plan of field archaeology in Bairen City site of Renmin University of China, and is also the start of the third archaeological excavation of the site. With the focus on both academic training and field practice, the practice is carried out to improve students’ practical ability as well as cultivate their interest in archaeology. History majors, in this practice, are expected to have the basic ability to independently complete field archaeological excavations and compile the reports.
The cultural layer in Bairen city site can reach 3 meters and the remains are abundant. In 2013, it was announced by The State Council as one of the seventh batch of national key cultural relics under protection.
