On December 10th, the first RUC interdisciplinary doctoral student salon was successfully held online. The event brought together Ph.D. students of different majors from Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University, Beijing University of Technology, Nanjing University, Xiamen University and etc.

The opening ceremony was moderated by Professor Du Huanfang, Party Secretary of RUC Law School. Hu Baijing, Vice President of RUC, Chen Yanbin, Vice Dean of RUC graduate school, and Huang Wenyi, Dean of RUC Law School addressed the salon.

Hu Baijing noted that the purpose of disciplinary division is aimed at the in-depth understanding of academic fields. Nonetheless, it may form barriers between disciplines. As a result, academics must view the development of humanity and society as a whole, breaking the barriers between different academic fields and strengthening interdisciplinary research. That’s exactly what RUC have been doing over the past years. He added that this salon, with science and technology and governance as its focus, covers various disciplines, including law, economics, information science, education and sociology. He hoped students of different academic background can pool their wisdom together and jointly solve the problems faced by humanity.

Chen Yanbin suggested that interdisciplinary education is expected to help students keep pace with the latest academic trend and achieve breakthrough in their fields. He then encouraged participants to take advantage of the interdisciplinary and cross-school event to exchange views and improve themselves.

Huang Wenyi stated that with the emergence of big data, AI and block chain, modern technology will change the landscape of the rule of law in the future. In response to that, RUC Law School has adopted many measures to boost greater integration of rule of law and S&T in interdisciplinary education. For example, Renmin Law and Technology Institute was established in 2017. Going forward, he hoped students to take advantage of scientific and technological revolution to improve global governance.

The first session of the salon focused on the construction of order in the context of S&T and governance. Wang Ziyuan, a PhD candidate in Education Economics and Management at the School of Education, Renmin University of China, hosted this session. Students from RUC Law School, School of Law of Xiamen University, School of Law of Beijing Institute of Technology presented their researches at the salon respectively. The second session centered on the specific application of S&T and governance. The session was moderated by Ding Guangyu from RUC Law School. Students from RUC School of Sociology and Population Studies, RUC School of Education, School of Social and Behavioral Sciences of Nanjing University and Beijing Normal University Law School shared their latest researches.

Following their presentations, Professors from RUC commented on their remarks and offered their suggestion, helping them improve their research from different perspective.

The salon attracted nearly 1000 viewers online. Going forward, RUC will organize more similar activities for Ph.D. students of different majors to exchange their views and broaden their horizon, thus establishing a greater platform for interdisciplinary education.
