Parallel Sessions of APEC Energy Forum 2022 Successfully Held in RUC

APEC Energy Forum 2022 was held on November 12, 2022. APEC Energy Forum 2022 aims to facilitate energy cooperation and academic research while deepening mutual learning and people-to-people exchanges using think-tank communication. In the spirit of multilateralism, APEC Energy Forum 2022 focuses on low-carbon development and makes its mark to open the world economy, thus promoting global multilateral cooperation. The forum covers in-depth discussions on energy transition, technology innovation, climate finance, and biodiversity. Besides, scholars and experts have discussed opportunities and challenges in energy transition and sustainable development through the lenses of government, international organizations, enterprises, and universities.

Renmin University of China (RUC), one of the offline venues, held parallel sessions on Beijing and Suzhou campuses. The former one was co-organized by the National Academy of Development and Strategy, themed “green energy and ecological conservation”. And the latter one, APEC Regional Youth Forum, was co-organized by the Silk Road School, with the theme of “Low Carbon, Zero Waste and Green Campus Smart Action”.

In Beijing Campus, the event was convened in a hybrid way with online and offline venues. Culture Building of RUC served as one of the offline venues to hold parallel session three themed “green energy and ecological conservation”. Li Junfeng, executive director of the Chinese Energy Research Society and the first director of the Climate Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, presided over the parallel session.

Representatives from the energy sector thoroughly discussed clean energy and ecological protection. Zhu Qiming, assistant director of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) and APEC Energy Working Group vice-chairman, delivered a keynote speech.

Parallel session three themed “green energy and ecological conservation” is highly relevant to APEC’s green development goal and the UN 2030 Agenda. Participating scholars and experts develop practical suggestions for follow-up actions on accelerating China’s energy transition and APEC green development.

In Suzhou Campus, the APEC Regional Youth Forum was held in the Silk Road School, with the theme of “Low Carbon, Zero Waste and Green Campus Smart Action”. The forum was moderated by Zhou Junbang, a Ph.D. student at the School of International Studies, RUC.

Young student representatives from APEC economies actively participated in the forum, including Tang Hong from Hong Kong Polytechnic University, China, Sun Yujie (Rafael Salvador Pina Sturla) from the Silk Road School, Liu Guichao from the School of International Studies, RUC, and Johan Fu from Imperial College of Technology, UK, also an editor of the journal Next Hypothesis.

The APEC Regional Youth Forum, inviting outstanding young student representatives from the APEC region to participate in seminars and speeches, is set up to lead the youth to practice the concept of green development, motivate the youth to actively participate in the cause of sustainable development, and promote the power of youth to write a new chapter of youth solidarity and cooperation in the world.
